"the garden of time", met gala theme explained

Inspired by a short story written by J.G. Ballard in 1962, a story set in the XIX century about a count and countess who live in a large beautiful villa full of flowers, where everyday they can see an army or 'mob' approaching their villa from the safety of their balcony. Each evening as the army grows closer, the count plucks a flower from their garden made of crystals, which in turn, pushes the mob back. We discover that the crystal flowers reverse space and time. But they only have a few left in the garden. The outcome of the story becomes inevitable, hence why the story is often seen as a metaphor for evolution and the endless cycle of creation and destruction. One night they run out of flowers, and they're faced with the mob entering their villa. As the villa is being ambushed, we find out there's two stone figures resembling the count and countess, hidden by a large bush full of thorns and roses, that go untouched by water, fire, air, and people around, and seemingly remain there through space and time.

Also known as "sleeping beauties; reawakening fashion", 2024's met gala theme is not to be confused with disney princesses, or a garden tea party (thought I could see the majority of attendees being literal about it).

2024's met gala theme is about garments that have been used and preserved over time. Just like in the story, fashion historians have tried to fight back time, people, and natural elements to preserve the fabric of such pieces. I can see thierry mugler's 1982 and saint laurent's ss1999 collection being present.

We can expect to see iconic gowns from fashion history that are too fragile to be worn again. "Sleeping Beauties", garments that have remained untouched since they were last worn. Lots of vintage pieces, archive pulls, and sustainability all around.

While I expect to see pieces related to the natural elements, we can't ignore the darker side of the book. I can see some guests taking a darker route and alluring to the inevitable doom that is time. They could reference hollywood's obsession with beauty and how time takes it away from you. Or they could go as far as referencing the current state of the world and how human destruction is inevitable. I could see a lot of the newer Maison Margiela collections, or archive pulls from Alexander Mcqueen, as he tends to relate nature with more obscure themes.

Needless to say, I'm excited for tomorrow's gala. Could be one for the books.

The same reductive strain was apparent in The Pangbourne Pang, desktop-printed by Roger Sterling and distributed between March and June 1988 to its thirteen readers. In a lively tabloid visual style, it specialized only in boring news. "Egg boils in three minutes" and "Staircase leads to second floor" are two of its banner headlines. Graham Lymington, meanwhile, programmed his computer to calculate pi to a million places, and papered the walls of his bedroom with the printouts. Gently dissuaded from this by his parents, he then put out Radio Free Pangbourne, an audiocassette program, six issues of which were distributed to the other children in November and December 1987. This was a sequence of random sounds, mostly his own breathing, interspersed with long patches of silence.

What is the dress code?

This year’s 2024 Met Gala dress code is “The Garden of Time.” Inspired by J.G. Ballard's short story of the same title, written in 1962, it can be interpreted in a myriad of ways. Still, we'll likely see many a floral and botanical looks grace the famed Met Gala red carpet.

Oh cool. The guy who wrote "Why I Want to Fuck Ronald Reagan" and Crash huh?

"The Garden of Time" is cute (hmu if you want a pdf) and it reminds me of Lord Dunsany but I expect it to be wildly misinterpreted by the celebs since it can potentially be regarded as a poetic depiction of the cycles of life and death or destruction and rebirth over the course of humanity's history but I like to read it more like rich people desperately trying to stave off their inevitable end in the face of the masses.

The gala's theme wasn't truly supposed to be a delightful garden. It's just that most people read the description and didn't read the short (!) story it's based on--so. comparisons to The Hunger Games are apt, Katniss' actress is a Zionist even though Israel bombs hospitals, tortures people (including children), ethnically cleanses and displaces Palestinians (how many times have people been displaced, how many times have "safe passages" been bombed, go to Rafah it's safe--except it's not, displaced again...), IDF seizing the border crossing so no aid gets in (aside from all their attacks on aid trucks, the flour massacres, etc.), etc.--just like the Capitol or even arguably worse. Most of them cannot truly understand or believe these things in reality. They pay only lip service. Or rebellion, genocide, freedom fighters... all of these are only subjects of history and fiction.

*Look, I even used western sources, because so many people don't want to hear from Arab sources.

even the theme for their little party is meant to criticize seeking some modicum of immortality in art and beauty, while also using it to completely distract yourself from the suffering of the common man, because who cares about everyone else, right? You and your loved ones are the only people who matter!

The Garden of Time is a dystopic short story depicting the fall of aristocracy.

It's largely set in a beautiful garden of crystalline time flowers (so, that's where the Lucario movie got it from, that adds another layer to Aaron's character...) which, when mature, take one back into the past when picked. The aristocratic couple, Count Axel and his wife, use these and music and other finery to distract themselves from the approaching army of commoners, even as they loom closer and closer...

It ends, of course, tragically for the couple, as they run out of flowers, the last one is too young to offer more than a fleeting moment, like one beautiful bird taking flight, and all the art, books, music--everything they distracted themselves with and cherished was destroyed, even as statues of them overlook the chaos.
